East London - A man was shot dead during a hijacking outside a tavern in Msobomvu Township in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

On Friday night, the man left his car parked outside the tavern with the keys in the ignition and two women passengers in the car, said police spokesperson Jackson Manatha.

He heard the women screaming and the man and his friend ran to the car park to see what the commotion was about.

The friend arrived at the car first and saw three armed men forcing the women out of the car.

One of the hijackers pointed a gun at the car owner's friend, but the he managed to avoid the ensuing shots.

The car owner was shot three times in the upper body and died on the scene.

The hijackers drove away in the car and police had been unable to trace either them or the car by Saturday evening, Manatha said.
