Man on R3 000 bail for guns

Bloemfontein - A Ficksburg man appeared in the local magistrate's court on Wednesday for the illegal possession of various firearms and ammunition, said Free State police.

Constable Christopher Mophiring said Johan Herman van der Merwe, 42, was given bail of R3 000 and the case was postponed to September 23.

Van der Merwe was arrested on Monday after 12 unlicensed rifles and 3 360 rounds of ammunition were found at his house in Ficksburg.

Among the weapons were three inactive mortars, two projectiles and an AK-47 rifle.

Mophiring said it could not be established why Van der Merwe allegedly had the weaponry.

He was arrested after police received a tip-off from the public.
