Port Elizabeth - Two elderly sisters were severely assaulted and robbed on Tuesday morning by an unknown man in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said.
Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said Susanna Groenewald, 84, and Mizpah Cronje, 79, were attacked at their home at about 03:00.
"Groenewald was in the kitchen when she was accosted by a man who jumped from behind the refrigerator. He hit her over her head with a bottle and ordered her to lay on the floor," she said.
Naidu said Cronje went to investigate and she was also attacked with a bottle.
"They sustained severe injuries. Cronje is in hospital and her sister was treated by a private doctor".
The man took money, clothes and a DVD player while the sisters were lying on the floor.
Naidu said the man had gained entry into the house by breaking the pantry door.
"We are investigating a case of house breaking and attempted murder, but nobody has been arrested," she said.
