Man seeks justice for dead daughter

2012-06-04 09:04

Mossel Bay - A devastated father is determined to get justice for his daughter, who was allegedly killed by a convicted drunk driver as he tried to flee from the police in Hartenbos, Mossel Bay.

The Weekend Argus reported that Dante Hageman, 10, and her best friend Sonja van Wyk, 11, died in the accident in February while Sonja’s father, Jaco van Wyk, was seriously injured.

Friedl Roller, 39, is believed to have several previous convictions for drunk and reckless driving and apparently had a suspended sentence when police pulled him over for reckless driving on the night of the accident.

As he sped away, he crashed into Van Wyk’s car.

Now one of the dead girls’ fathers is determined to put Roller behind bars.

Mark Hageman started a campaign, No Bail for Friedl Roller and got 5 000 signatures for his petition.

“She was my everything,” said a devastated Hageman.

A protest has also been planned for Roller’s court appearance on Thursday.

  • William - 2012-06-04 09:18

Put him behind bars and throw away the key!!! If I think of all the times I have been behind the wheel and plastered in my younger days I thank GOD that knowbody was hurt or killed!!! Young and dumb!!! This pretty much equates to murder. A culture has developed of people getting behind the wheel after having 1 to many!!! Our penalties are not strict enough!!!

Maybe the judge who only gave him a suspended sentence should be blamed. Or the judge that let him loose after the last drunk driving charge.

JAIL????? And then next year they will be free again........There is no justice in South Africa!!!!!!!

      Multi - 2012-06-04 12:12

I agree with you Annerie..Jail will be for our cost AGAIN..it is time we do something "constructive". If this happened in the Country where I am in now, he would have been "permanently removed from society"...no matter what his/her race or gender.

its cases like this that lead communities to take law into their owm hands because the state fails to curb scum like this reckless driver. If it were the townships i guarantee you the guy would have been sorted by now.
