Johannesburg - A police officer and two Community Policing Forum members were shot and injured with a automatic rifle while searching a house in Randfontein, Gauteng police said on Saturday.
Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said a 59-year-old man opened fire on the law enforcing officers as they were searching his house for unlicensed firearms on Friday evening.
"A shoot-out ensued and the man barricaded himself in a room from where he later shot himself dead. "
Mogale said the injured 37-year-old police officer and the two CPF members, both aged 27, had been transported to local hospitals.
"All three are in serious but stable condition."
Mogale said the deceased shooter's son had been arrested earlier on Friday with a friend when an unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in their vehicle.
"Information given by the two arrested men led the police to the older man's house." Police were investigating attempted murder charges and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Propaganda material such as books and pamphlets were also found throughout the house, said Mogale.
