Newcastle - A man was wounded after accidentally blocking the escape of two armed robbers in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Monday.
Captain Shooz Magudulela said two men had broken into a house in Newcastle's Fairley suburb and held up the owners in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The two men demanded money and cellphones. As they were leaving they came across a man who rented a house on the property and who was returning after a night out with his girlfriend.
One of the robbers shot the tenant, who, although wounded, still managed to scramble to safety. The tenant used his cellphone to call the police.
The two armed robbers were arrested not far from the house and are expected to appear in court shortly on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery.
The tenant was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound to his side.
Magudulela said the man was described as being in a stable condition.
