Johannesburg - A man on parole was shot dead in the presence of correctional services officials at his home in Mitchells Plain, the department of correctional services said on Sunday.

Regional commissioner Delekile Klaas said correctional officers went to the man's home on Friday night to monitor him as part of his parole conditions.

"They found him at home. He was signing parole papers with the officials, when gunmen emerged and shot him dead." The gunmen fled and were not identified.

Klaas said the correctional officers were not wounded, but were traumatised.

He said the murdered man had been a gang leader before his arrested, but that it had not been confirmed whether the shooting was gang related.

Western Cape police said the shooting in Hengelaar, Beacon Valley, was reported on Friday at 23:00.

"Upon arrival they [police] found the body of an unknown adult male who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body," said Captain Frederick van Wyk.

He said no arrests had been made and a murder case was being investigated. The motive for the shooting was not known.
