Man shot dead in robbery

Polokwane - A 35-year-old suspected robber died in hospital after a gun battle with the police in Bolobedu, Limpopo police said on Saturday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said three armed men stormed into a business in Wale village in Bolobedu on Friday afternoon.

They robbed an Indian businessman of his Hyundai bakkie and air time vouchers.

A security guard at the shop was also robbed of his firearm.

The police spotted two of the three men in the stolen bakkie.

"The suspects fled and police gave chase. One of the suspects, wielding a firearm, was shot in the right leg and the other suspect escaped."

The wounded man identified as Matome Abel Monyela died on arrival at the Kgapane Hospital.

Ramatseba said the Independent Complaints Directorate was also notified in order to conduct an independent investigation.

An inquest docket was opened and an intensive search has been launched for the two men who were still on the run.
