Man shot dead outside Cape Town school

2012-02-15 09:15

Cape Town - A 37-year-old-man from Manenberg was shot dead outside a Cape Town private school on Monday afternoon in full view of pupils and parents, the Cape Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Rashied Moses, 37, was shot in the face and neck at St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray as children walked through the school gates to meet their parents. He died at the scene.

Headmaster Julian Cameron said the shooting took place about 500 metres from the school.

“The school was out already," he told the Cape Times.

"There were a small number of learners, staff members and parents who came to fetch their children who witnessed the incident. Fortunately none of them were hurt. We have put in place steps to ensure that the children who witnessed the incident go through trauma counselling."

Witnesses said a scuffle broke out between two men and a woman, which led to the fatal shooting.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said a 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene after he allegedly shot at his ex-wife's fiancé in an altercation. Van Wyk said the cause of the fight was being investigated.

This is dreadful, those children should never have been exposed to this. Parents, think before you act. Tragic that someone died. RIP

      Lorenzo - 2012-02-15 10:18

What has this got to do with the parents? Should they have known there was a psychopath 500 meters away about to shoot someone? karen.glautier, Think before you type :p

      wesleywt - 2012-02-15 10:19

      Karmah - 2012-02-15 10:33

      lynsey.rimbault - 2012-02-15 11:03

Where did it say that the woman, her ex-husband and her fiance were related in anyway to the school? Karmah and Karen, where does it say that they had children?

      Karring - 2012-02-15 11:36

      Craig - 2012-02-15 13:50

It actually happened half a kilometre away, the school and the victim may have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

      Karmah - 2012-02-15 14:20

I thought Valentines day was reserved for mob killings!

  • amelia.vandermerwe1 - 2012-02-15 10:48

Our children are being put through so many things in life these days, I don't think that they can cope with this anymore. If there are not the killings amongst school pupils, then it is a friend who get killed, trying to stop a negative situation, now this ???? Our children has so much to look forward too, but some of us crab this and change it into a negative future. Trauma Counselling... do you really think that these children are going to GET OVER IT..., don't think so. Our Adults had our scool fun, if you have a problem, solve it at home, not where our future are trying to build a better future. Give these children their freedom to make this land a better place to be in.

  • ericaslinger - 2012-02-15 11:34

This is not the first time he shoots someone on Valentines Day, 11 years ago he also shot someine in Manenberg on Valentines Day & nothing happened. It would be interesting to see what happens this time around

      Kgolane - 2012-02-15 12:02

Wow..... when sum1 random guy is shot 500m from a Cape Town private school it makes frontpage news but when students from the Cape Flats are shot right outside the school gate, it goes unnoticed......Interesting

      Blip - 2012-02-15 12:07

Commonplace events simply aren't newsworthy. Uncommon events are. It's a simple fact of life. Dog bites man = not news. Man bites dog = news.

      Deon - 2012-02-15 12:44

It was Monday afternoon not yesterday.

      Craig - 2012-02-15 13:56

Ha Kgolane, but the first time it was a coloured government school, this time it was a whitey school, that's Cape Town for you.

      AdrianFrith - 2012-02-15 14:44

Kgolane, Craig: don't you think the fact that the other shooting was 11 years ago might also have something to do with it...?

  • Trevor - 2012-02-15 13:38

I went to fetch my 4 yr old from after care which is right at the gate where this all went down...it looked like 100m from the gate and police had just secured the scene...it was traumatic... it bugs me that gang gun culture has become a norm and is in schools...i think it time guns are removed from society...ban them outright.

      Brett - 2012-02-15 14:39

Yes because criminals respect bans dont they?

  • Vernon - 2012-02-15 15:00

500m is not precisely what I would call "outside the school". Sensationalist media!

      johnkk - 2012-02-15 18:56

I must agree with you Vernon. 500m is far from being in front of a school

  • frans.grobler3 - 2012-02-15 15:40

Now the ex ex ex is totally exed from the ex ex aag what!

  • karen.glautier - 2012-02-15 18:30

Karma, Janine & Yola-me, you are so sweet to defend me. I didn't make my statement to win public approval, it was my opinion. I read the article and felt sad for the children, perhaps my mistake was assuming these people were there to collect their children. What surprises me is that so many people became so aggressive, you gotta wonder if the comment about parents thinking before acting didn't strike a little close to the bone for these individuals?

  • isabel.defaria - 2012-02-15 18:41

The dead man was at the school to collect his daughter and the daughter of the shooter ... he was shot in front of his own child and the other child. It is sad and very unfortunate that it happened at all and especially at the school. Work with a relative who has no idea what was going on in their lives. Very sad indeed...

  • duzi.dxulu - 2012-02-15 20:15

so sad, rest in peace my brother.
