Johannesburg - A 70-year-old man was shot dead in a bank robbery in Elliot, police said on Sunday.

Brigadier Marinda Mills said two men entered the First National Bank on Saturday morning and threatened employees with a hammer and a gun.

They assaulted the bank manager and obtained keys to the safe.

Two more men then entered the bank with a sports bag, filled it up with an undisclosed amount of money and left with the other robbers.

A fifth man waiting outside the bank started firing shots and killed the elderly man.

Police opened fire on the robbers, but they got away in a silver Volkswagen Polo and silver Hummer.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mpumelelo Landu said investigations would reveal whether the men were part of a gang which recently escaped from Wellington Prison in Mthatha.

How terrible are the police at catching criminals...police opened fire on the robbers but they got away? whaaaaat? They obviously weren't going in the direction of the nearest KFC or Nandos.

Im from Elliot and first of all were in the Eastern cape Good Heavens! secondly it was so much more terrifying than this article makes it seem... there was an gun battle between robbers and civilians for at least 30 min so many more people could have been hurt and our comunity feels the loss of this man but also thanks God that there were not more hurt...then we are all wondering,...what if there were better action in place.... roadblocks...helicopters... helooooo or dont we have things like that anymore?? seems like robbers can get away with murder, and a few million...very easily....just my humble opinion

How sad that something like that must happen in such a small community. My family and friends live in Elliot and thank the Lord they are all fine. Sorry for the loss of the person that was shot. Apparently the police had a call or sms from the criminals stating that they would be visiting the area is that true and if it is what can I say? No Cheryl it costs the government money so defend yourself steel a gun if you have to but for goodness sake just don't ask the government. Thinking of you people in Elliot.
