Man shot in Elliot bank robbery
Johannesburg - A 70-year-old man was shot dead in a bank robbery in Elliot, police said on Sunday.
Brigadier Marinda Mills said two men entered the First National Bank on Saturday morning and threatened employees with a hammer and a gun.
They assaulted the bank manager and obtained keys to the safe.
Two more men then entered the bank with a sports bag, filled it up with an undisclosed amount of money and left with the other robbers.
A fifth man waiting outside the bank started firing shots and killed the elderly man.
Police opened fire on the robbers, but they got away in a silver Volkswagen Polo and silver Hummer.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mpumelelo Landu said investigations would reveal whether the men were part of a gang which recently escaped from Wellington Prison in Mthatha.
