Durban - Detectives have been left baffled after a KwaMaphumulo man was stabbed repeatedly and thrown off a cliff at the weekend.

The 31-year-old man had left his home on Sunday in the settlement north of Durban to buy airtime, but never returned.

His body, pockmarked with stab wounds, was found at the foot of a steep cliff.

Police Search and Rescue Unit officers used an elaborate rope system to haul his body to the overhang.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said police were alerted after someone had seen a body at the foot of the drop.

“Upon arrival at the scene, they were shown where the body was and the rescue team was called. The body had stab wounds and his cell was found [a] few metres away from the crime scene,” he said.

“The motive for the killing is unknown,” Zwane added.

A case of murder has been opened at KwaMaphumulo police station. No arrests have been made.
