Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping his 82-year-old grandmother in Bolobedu, Limpopo police said.

The 24-year-old, who stays with his grandmother, demanded the key to the house and she tossed it beneath the door, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

"Unbeknown to the victim, the suspect allegedly forced his way into the house, attacking the old frail lady by strangling her until she lost consciousness and then allegedly raped her," he said.

"After regaining consciousness a few minutes later, the old lady alerted the neighbours of her ordeal, who called her daughter and police respectively."

She was taken to hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

The man would appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate's Court on Monday.
