Johannesburg - A man is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly assaulting a metro police officer in Alberton, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.

He was arrested on Thursday after he and another man were found at the officer's home in Verwoerd Park, allegedly trying to break in, Kgasago said.

The suspected robbers fled when they saw two dogs in the yard.

The officer, who was home, chased them in his car and called for police back-up.

"He then confronted the pair in a bushy area along the [N3 southbound] freeway and was severely assaulted with steel rods," Kgasago said.

"Officers who responded to his call for back-up managed to arrest one suspect and the other one got away."

The officer was at home recovering from his injuries.
