Johannesburg - A man tried to kill himself by throwing himself in front of a truck after allegedly killing a man in a fight over a cellphone, North West police said on Sunday.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said he had stabbed a man who had tried to intervene in the fight between himself and his sister.

Stabbed in the shoulder, the peacemaker bled to death on the scene.

After this the man went to the road and tried to kill himself by letting a truck hit him, said Makau.

"Unfortunately only his right lower leg was broken and he was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition and under police guard, and will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from hospital."
