Man trying to steal golf estate's cables shot

2012-09-18 13:08

Johannesburg - Security guards shot and wounded a man who was trying to steal electric cables at a golf estate in Waterkloof, Pretoria, paramedics said on Tuesday.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the man was found lying in a field inside the golf estate with a wound to the chest on Tuesday morning.

She said three men had tried to steal electric cables from the golf estate on Monday night. They fled when they saw the security guards, but one of them was shot.

He was found unconscious on the grounds on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics treated the man for blood loss before taking him to hospital.

The area's electricity supply was temporarily affected.

On Monday, parts of Roodepoort were without power after cable theft left a man dead, and a sub-station in flames.

- An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the incident took place in Irene and the electricity supply was unaffected, but it was at Waterkloof Golf Club and there was an electricity disruption.

Don't worry others also have spelling problems. "STADAG" wrote a municipality in big white letters on a road close to a school recently (Bloem if I remember correctly). How nearly was his "lites" out!

That's just great WE are allowed to protect our property by gbh or attempted murder or murder! Watch the crime rate and crime statistics go down now! Unfortunately the POLICY ENFORCERS will charge the security guards with GBH or attempted murder or murder if he dies!

  • kala.bafazi - 2012-09-18 13:41

Even better that he had the opportunity to lie in the grass the whole night wondering if he was going to die and whether stealing copper wire was worth the risk.

Yipppeeee. Way to go, security people. Thieves like these are terrorists. Shoot them on sight.

These security guards in big trouble. You're not allowed to shoot at people who do not pose an imminent threat to you safety.

"...shot and wounded..." ????? Should have been "...Shot and Killed.." !!!!!!!!!!

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-09-18 13:57

Why did they try to treat them for blood loss, they could have contracted hiv while trying to save a criminal who also might be a murderer?

      rick.machiavelli.1 - 2012-09-18 14:16

Should have called paramedics from Bloemfontein to help.

  • dewald.galjaard - 2012-09-18 13:57

What I want to know is this - Howcome they are allowed to shoot someone ATTEMPTING to steal cables but I am not allowed to shoot and intruder in my house in the middle of the night?

  • marc.rule - 2012-09-18 14:01

Now that is how it should be done.

I find this article very sympathetic towards the criminal element. My suggestion would be along the lines of “A suspected thief was wounded whilst trying to steal... Two got away and one was wounded.” News reporting should be factual not morally correct. This article leaves a faint impression that the security guard was maybe a bit harsh on the men who tried to take something that he is paid to protect because men like them don’t appreciate capital ownership rules.

  • godesha - 2012-09-18 15:12

Have not learnt what happens when you try and steal cables? Or did he go to a Sangoma for protection?

  • lourens.fick.1 - 2012-09-18 15:55

The information in this article is wrong. The incident happened at the Waterkloof Golf Club/Estate. Contrary to what is stated in the article there was and still is an electricity disruption. This information is from the Golf Club Manager of Waterkloof Golf Club.
