Man wants R1.6m after pothole crash

2012-06-20 10:49

Pretoria - A Pretoria man who hit a pothole while driving his motorbike and sustained serious injuries is claiming R1.6m from the roads agency.

The Pretoria News reported that Jacobus Minnie, 31, had severe head injuries, a fractured arm and shattered nasal bones following the accident on the N12 highway in the early hours of 30 January 2005.

He had to be evacuated by emergency helicopter and was in hospital for eight weeks, undergoing several operations. He said he was still in pain and unable to work for four month after the crash.

His claim from the South African National Roads Agency was based on the fact that they had to ensure that roads were maintained and that potholes were filled.

The road agency denied liability and also claimed that Minnie in some way contributed to the accident.

The court case continues.

In what way did he contribute, other than driving into a hole that is not supposed to be there?

The road agency fund was used to pay for the BLUE LIGHT brigade that hit the young man on his bike. That man should have been paid by the minister not by 'US' the tax payer through the road agency fund. The blue light brigade caused the accident and therefore should be responsible. This man Jacobus should be paid out fully. We used to drive on the left of the road, now we drive on WHATS left of the road!

I feel the roads agency is liable. We pay our taxes and they are paid to maintain the roads. I hope he gets paid out.

A few months ago I very good friend died thanks to a porthole. He hit the pothole and lost control of his bike and hitting an oncoming car... Personally I think that the Municipality should face manslaughter charges when the failure to repair roads leads to a death. They would charge us with manslaughter if someone died on our property as a result of negligence to maintain the property.
