Johannesburg - A man allegedly sjambokked his wife to death near Klipgat in the North West province, police said on Saturday.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said the man, aged between 50 and 60-years-old, handed himself over to police on Friday.

The incident took place in the village of Ikageng at 04:00  on Friday following an argument between the couple.

"When police arrived they found a sjambok and a pick axe handle next to the deceased. The suspect admitted to the police that he used both instruments to assault his wife," Makau said.

The man will appear in the Ga-rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Monday.
