Pretoria - A man from Pretoria who allegedly hanged his dog from a branch of a tree was arrested on Monday morning after hiding from the police for a month.

He is expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of animal cruelty.

The 36-year-old man lives and works on a smallholding at Onderstepoort.

Police spokesperson William Mahlaole said on Monday that the incident had taken place on January 21.

"The man lost his temper after the dog ate a piece of meat which he had put on the table.

"He was so angry about the meat that he hanged the dog from a branch of a tree with a piece of rope. The dog died."

According to Mahlaole, the man's neighbours saw what happened and phoned the police.

The man fled shortly before police arrived at the scene. The police were unable to track him down until Monday.
