Mandela a giant: Vavi

2012-07-18 17:02

Pretoria - Former president Nelson Mandela was a genuine leader who put his life in danger to serve, expecting nothing in return, Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Wednesday.

"In 67 years of his life in public service, in our common struggle to build a non-racial democracy in South Africa, he understood that he would be failing humankind if he does not sacrifice with his own life," Vavi told a conference in Centurion.

"It is so important for us to speak about unity today, particularly at a time when we face a serious challenge of pretenders at all levels. Mandela is genuine, he never did things so that he would get some form of support."

Vavi said Mandela was not only an icon of South Africa, but Africa and the world.

He led delegates at the conference in singing Happy birthday Madiba.

July 18 was declared Mandela Day by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2009. Mandela celebrated turning 94 on Wednesday.

Alaina what r u on about...?

      Lennon Chenga - 2012-07-18 17:49

Alaina!!! Really?? Why do you have to post such comments? Do you realize the problems you create by being so irresponsible with your words? As good a job as the DA may pull you will find that most people will never warm up to whatever they do because of comments like that! We are 18yrs into independence and this is definitely not a time to be opening up old wounds! Do you understand the meaning of a terrorist?? How would you have wanted a person fighting against apartheid at that time to conduct themselves? Do you think the whole world that emulates this man is stupid and you are enlightened? Do not continue separating people with such irresponsible remarks please!! We want to move on, choose leaders based on character and credentials not on skin color!! Comments like this continue to bring mistrust among races and we go back 20-30yrs to see who did what!! It is very foolish, arrogant, irresponsible and ignorant to post such comments in 2012!!! Please stop it!!

This is what Alaina is on about, judge for yourself, http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~springbk/enemy.html

      Lennon Chenga - 2012-07-18 18:12

@renny it's acts like that that brought us our freedom!! Would it have been necessary to pull such acts had there been no oppression? What did u want black people to do at that time inorder to win their freedom?? What were the oppressors doing at that time to our people?? My point is that you are not doing anyone any favors by opening up such wounds!! I witnessed massacres being conducted by the oppressors at that time, do you want us to discuss them right now?? What are we going to achieve? Do you think we will smile at each other after such discussions?

The ANC must breathe a sigh of relief on Mandela day. It's at least one day of the year they can deflect all the embarrasment and scandals.
