Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela's two youngest daughters were at the royal premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in London when their father passed away, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said in a statement on Friday.

The movie, which was released in South Africa last week, is based on the former president's life.

"They [the daughters] received the news of their father's passing during the screening and immediately left the cinema," said the organisation.

Among the people at the premiere were the Duke of Cambridge Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

President Jacob Zuma announced just before midnight on Thursday that Mandela had died at his Houghton home in Johannesburg.

"He passed on peacefully in the company of his family around 20:50 on 5 December," Zuma said.

"He is now resting, he is now at peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son."

Zuma said flags around the country would be flown at half-mast from Friday until after Mandela's funeral.

"Our beloved Madiba will be accorded a state funeral. I order that all flags be lowered to half-mast from tomorrow 6 December and to remain at half-mast till after the funeral as we gather to pay our last respects," he said.
