Mandela driver trial postponed

2012-04-19 16:45
Johannesburg - The trial of the driver of the car involved in an accident that killed Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter was delayed in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court due to technical problems in the courtroom on Thursday.

Zenani Mandela,13, died in a car accident on the M1 near Johannesburg at the start of the soccer World Cup in 2010.

Sizwe Mankazana is facing charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of liquor or drugs. He has pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Vivian Hawkins ordered the recording equipment in the court to be tested when it was found that a section of testimony from Monday's hearing had not been taped.

Defence attorney Kenneth Oldwaldge said he had discovered that an important part of his cross-examination of witness Henry Miller, the accident scene investigator, was not on the transcript.

Technicians were called to the court and the witness, State prosecutor Paul Schutte and Oldwaldge revised the recording and agreed something was amiss.

Hawkins adjourned the trial until 14:00 on Thursday.
