Johannesburg - The Western Cape police on Tuesday vowed to find the killers of three policemen in Cape Town.

"We remain resolute in our endeavours to fight crime and we will conduct round-the-clock investigations into all these incidents and bring those responsible to book," national police commissioner Riah Phiyega said.

Three policemen were killed in Nyanga and Mfuleni, Cape Town.

Sergeant Sibongile Ngcawuzele, 37, and Constable Monwabisi Khaka, 33, were shot dead while on duty in Nyanga on Sunday, police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana said.

"The officers confirmed a vehicle had been hijacked and while waiting for a tow truck to arrive, they were gunned down in cold blood," Kinana said.

The officers' service pistols were stolen from them. The attackers fled in the hijacked vehicle, which was later recovered a few kilometres from the crime scene.

The third policeman was 41-year-old Sergeant Xolisa Mlindwa.

"The body of a Sergeant Mlindwa from Gugulethu police station was found with multiple gunshot wounds next to his vehicle in Faure Road in the Mfuleni area near Kuilsrivier," Kinana said.

He did not know when he was killed.

The City of Cape Town's Acting Mayor Ian Neilson was shocked by the killings.

"The city condemns these callous acts in the strongest possible terms and hopes that those responsible are found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law," he said.
