Johannesburg - A man's arm was severed below the shoulder when it was caught in the rollers of a machine at a factory in Germiston on the East Rand on Monday, said paramedics.

The 32-year-old man was working at the time, said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson. She said the machine stopped when his arm was caught.

He was alert, but in severe pain when paramedics got to the scene, and was stabilised before being airlifted to the Milpark Hospital, she said.

"The severely damaged arm was removed from the machine and packaged for transportation with the man to hospital," she said.

Assuming it was a accident beyond his control... He could be in for very nice compensation

That comment of yours was in very poor taste. Compensation has nothing to do with this tragedy. Have some compassion.

I'm with Forest on this one ... to often machine guards are removed by lazy workers to make it easier for them to work, and all too often they pay the maximum price for this action. It's much the same as not wearing a seat belt or driving over the speed limit, we all know it's wrong but we all do it and when something goes wrong we all say ah shame.
