Man's death in cell - suspects abandon bail

2012-05-10 17:20
Cape Town - Two men accused of beating to death a man locked up with them in a cell at the Durbanville police station abandoned their bail application on Thursday.

Daniel Dyosi and Sipho Mhlanga, who are charged with the alleged murder of Eben Meyer, appeared in the Bellville District Court.

Magistrate Piet Appelgryn did not ask them to plead.

Prosecutor Sherbanu Abrahams told the court the case was on the roll for a joint bail application.

Legal aid attorney N Salie, representing both, said the men had changed their minds and no longer wished to apply for bail.

The magistrate ordered that they remain in custody until their next court appearance on June 26.

The matter is likely to be transferred to the Bellville Regional Court for trial.

Meyer was reportedly arrested on 22 April for being drunk and disorderly in public, and was locked in the same cell as Dyosi and Mhlanga.

His body was found in the cell a few hours later.
