Johannesburg - A 25-year-old man's hand was cut off with a panga in Sharpeville on Thursday after an apparent argument over a girlfriend, police and paramedics said.

"It seems two men were arguing when a panga was pulled out," said ER24 spokesperson, Vanessa Jackson.

Neighbours bandaged the man's hand after the fight at 13:00 and helped him to the Sharpeville police station, said Warrant-Officer Aubrey Moopeloa.

The injured man and his hand were airlifted from the police station to a hospital in another city because the local hospitals were all affected by the strike.

His assailant had not yet been arrested.
