Man's precious bike destroyed in blaze

2012-05-30 09:23

Johannesburg - A month-and-a-half ago, a young man finally bought the motorcycle he had saved for.

On Tuesday morning, Chengetai Chauke, 26, a casual worker, wept inconsolably when he realised that a fire in Woodlane informal settlement, Pretoria, had destroyed the bike.

"I can't believe it's gone," a stunned Chauke told Beeld newspaper, which published a photograph of the burnt-out bike.

Ten shacks, Chauke's among them, were reduced to ashes after a gas stove fell over and ignited.

Chauke said he had paid R3 350 for the bike, and had been working hard to fix it and get it into a roadworthy condition.

He had aimed to get his driver's licence, and possibly use the new skill as a path to employment.

On Tuesday morning he went to a nearby crossroads in the hope of being picked up as a casual labourer, but when he returned at about 13:00, the fire was raging.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

Would be great to see the Traffic Department get on board with sponsored lessons and free test to get him legally licensed. Goodness knows they could do with some positive press! @Jason - great initiative!

      paulvkeys - 2012-05-30 10:51

Really good to see all the positive comments on news24 for a change, I'd gladly help, but living abroad limits me somewhat. Could I suggest speaking to a local website hosting company to sponsor a page to advertise? And someone starting a bank account where people could make donations? Who knows, maybe this could become a charity organisation for more than just one person in the future?

      Jason - 2012-05-30 10:56

I received feedback from News24, the journo for the Beeld who wrote the story is trying to set something up for donations! There are apparently lots of people wanting to help. They will let me know as soon as they know. So if you are keen to help out mail me at jason@investart.co.za

Marco, u are a disgrace, if u can afford to buy a Lambo, dont be such a heartless ass. This poor man is less fortunate than you, and he has just lost everything. have a dam heart....

      miyo27 - 2012-05-30 11:23

nobody cares about your imaginary Lamborghini and I hope your life stays off track. good luck!

      Lacrimose - 2012-05-30 11:41

Tsk tsk, although I know you're joking, who in their right mind would own a Lambo without any insurance?

      Jonathandereuck - 2012-05-30 15:44

Marco, thanks, seems I see things how they are, just like you. Don't let any of these Hypocrites make you think bad of yourself. Where in the world, or in SA rather would anything like this be done for white? Lets be honest here folks, Put away the guilty thoughts about moering your wife last night that makes you think that if you act all "Christian like" you will be forgiven, and tell me, Just where have you seen something being done for a white in South Africa? Sure, sad story, but I can think of a lot worse that has happened to people, where helping them, would truly make this a better place.

Awesome news! Can't wait to see this guys reaction when he receives his brand new bike.

      Marion - 2012-05-30 13:00

@MyNews Ed - so nice to know that you do actually monitor what is happening on the site. Seeing so many people were willing to help here, it may be a nice idea to start a News24 trust fund that we posters can donate money into as and when we can afford. The trust could be used to help others who are in dire need as drawn to our attention through news posted on the site. e.g. those who are not going to be assisted by anyone else. So much bad news would be great to have a good news fund.

      Dave - 2012-05-30 14:54

I have heard from Denise @ Tswelopele Step, I have donated R1000 as committed in these posts to Chengetai, and also R1000 to the community. Thanks to everyone here

  • Richard - 2012-05-30 12:32

I would love to see the smile on Chengetai Chaukes face when he gets delivery of his his new bike from Honda. I would suggest to news24 and Honda SA to make a video of this moment, as we all like to see a happy ending to a sad story. Makes me very proud to be a South African !!!!!
