Cape Town - The psychiatrists assessing Thandi Maqubela, recently convicted of the murder of her husband, acting judge Patrick Maqubela, need more time, the Western Cape High Court heard on Thursday.

The judge was based at the Western Cape High Court at the time of his death in June 2009.

She is to be sentenced for murder, fraud and forgery. The latter two charges relate to the judge's will which she forged to favour herself and her family.

She then fraudulently handed the document the Johannesburg office of the Master of the High Court, an office that deals with deceased estates.

At Thursday's proceedings before Judge John Murphy, prosecutor Bonnie Currie-Gamwo told the court she had received a letter from the head of Valkenberg psychiatric hospital, Prof Sean Kalisky.

Kalisky said the panel had completed the required 30 days' observation but needed another 30 days. Currie-Gumwo said the postponement to 8 December for this purpose was in the interests of justice.

Maqubela was not present at the proceedings as she was at the hospital under observation.

The letter was handed to the court, but not read into the record as the judge feared it might contain confidential information. Because it was not handed in as an exhibit the media had no right of access to it.

Murphy ordered that Maqubela remain in custody either at the hospital or Pollsmoor Prison.
