Johannesburg - Vuma Glen Mashinini, who is currently special projects adviser to the president, has been appointed as a member of the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC), the presidency announced on Thursday.

"President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996 [Act N. 51 of 1996] and on the recommendation of the National Assembly, appointed Mr Vuma Glenton Mashinini as a member of the Independent Electoral Commission for a period of seven years," spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

His appointment takes effect from May 1.

Last month, the National Assembly approved Mashinini's appointment despite opposition parties objecting to it.

He is widely regarded as an ally of Zuma's.

A post was left vacant at the IEC following the controversial departure of its former chairperson Pansy Tlakula.
