Cape Town - The University of Stellenboch has fired the head student, the house committee and the residence head of Majuba residence after explosive evidence came to light in the Snyman report.
University council member Letitia Snyman was head of an investigation launched by authorities after a serious assault on two students from Majuba, three weeks ago.
The students were attacked in their bedrooms by a group of masked attackers in army clothing.
The attackers called themselves the Majuba Internal Alliance (MIA). The students were beaten, thrown on the floor and kicked.
In her report, Snyman found that MIA was a "sanctioned internal structure in the residence" and the residence management was aware of it.
University rector Professor Chris Brink said at a press conference he was shocked at what had happened.
"I believe the whole university community and management are shocked that something like this could have happened."
The university did not want to release the Snyman report and said an urgent disciplinary investigation would start against those involved in the incident.
The two victims, Carl Beyers and Philip Botha, are back at Majuba and the residence has officially apologised.
The university will also approach the Human Rights Commission to help with an investigation into human rights violations and militaristic behaviour at campus residences.
