Cape Town - Stellenbosch University has elected Johann Rupert as its new chancellor, the university announced on Monday.
"It is an honour to have a person of his international stature, yet with firm roots in Stellenbosch, as chancellor of the university," the university said in a statement.
Rupert replaces Frederick van Zyl Slabbert who retired in September to spend more time with his family.
The new chancellor is a businessman who earned his first degree in company law and economics at Stellenbosch. He later worked in the United States before returning to South Africa in 1979 when Rupert founded the Rand Merchant Bank and the Small Business Development Corporation as well as leading several organisations.
"[Rupert] served in a leadership capacity in several institutions, ranging from the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns to the Daimler Chrysler International Advisory Board and Gold Fields South Africa," the university said.
