Johannesburg - Two matric pupils were killed and three others injured in an accident in Pinelands, Cape Town on Monday, the Western Cape education department said.

Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the pupils had just completed their Physical Sciences Paper 2 (Chemistry), and were on their way home.

The victims were Darren Hoffman and Roqeeb Isaacs.

Ezra Messenheimer and Jason Kansley were taken to the Vincent Pallotti hospital for the minor injuries they sustained, and Monique Odendaal was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital where she was in a serious but stable condition, Casey said.

The accident occurred on Jan Smuts Drive at 13:00. The details of the accident were not immediately clear.

Western Cape education MEC Donald Grant said: "I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Darren and Roqeeb. My thoughts are with them during this difficult time."

The department also sent counsellors to their school, Oude Molen High School, to assist in supporting pupils affected by tragedy.

"Our counsellors will be available tomorrow (Tuesday) at the school to provide trauma counselling. Both the police and a local church have also offered counselling," Grant said.
