Johannesburg - The M1 highway at the Grayston Drive in Sandton is ready to be reopened.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the road would be officially opened at around 14:30 by mayor Parks Tau.

News24 reporter Mpho Raborife, who is on the scene, said almost all the trucks deployed to ferry the debris had been moved from the road. Final touch-ups were being done by workers dressed in orange overalls who were spraying the road with water and sweeping away anything left behind.

It was understood the Johannesburg Metro Police Department was waiting for the green light from engineers on the scene before officially opening the road to the public.

Murray & Roberts, the company responsible for the construction over the bridge, had earlier said it expected the road to be re-opened by peak traffic.

The bridge's support structure, which runs along the M1 across Grayston Drive, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon shortly before the afternoon rush.

At least two people were killed and another 20 were injured when vehicles making their way past the bridge were crushed.

Murray & Roberts said it was investigating the cause of the collapse.
