Cape Town - National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has called a special meeting of the rules committee in the wake of the disruptions in Parliament on Thursday that led to proceedings being adjourned before they barely got going.

The meeting will replace the regular chief whips forum on Wednesday morning, according to a draft agenda circulated today.

On the agenda is the “discussion of measures pertaining to disruptions” in the house.

President Jacob Zuma did not get to deliver any oral replies and face supplementary questions from MPs in Parliament yesterday after EFF members insisted that he first answer when he was going to pay back the money for non-security upgrades at his home in Nkandla.

The president is due back in the house for oral replies during the next parliamentary term in August.

Confirming the meeting, Democratic Alliance chief whip John Steenhuisen said that a subcommittee was already overhauling the rules of Parliament, so the meeting on Wednesday would deal specifically with disruptions.

“You can’t have a situation where a 6% party bring the nation’s business to a standstill in Parliament.”

Earlier, ANC parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said multiparty structures needed to meet together to pave the way forward “to restore dignity to the institution of Parliament”.
