Cape Town - Tygerberg Hospital says it has CCTV footage of the man who attacked a final-year female medical student in the hospital over the weekend.

Die Burger reported that the woman was attacked on Saturday morning by a man who was waiting for her with a knife in a rest room used by students in between shifts.

The man pointed a knife at her and asked for her cellphone and wallet. He also wanted to rape her and wanted to know if she had a condom, but then didn’t rape her.

He asked her to remain in the room until he had left, and she later informed security guards of the incident.

A Tygerberg Hospital spokesperson said it was the first incident of this nature, but that officials had CCTV footage which was being examined.

A Stellenbosch University spokesperson said the university regretted the incident, adding that security measures had been in place at Tygerberg for some time.

The Cape Times reports the student received trauma counselling, but has returned to work.
