Johannesburg - A large media contingent was waiting at the back entrance to the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday morning in the hope of seeing paralympian Oscar Pistorius.
He was expected to appear in court on a charge of murder.
His model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead at his home in the Silver Woods country estate, in Pretoria, on Thursday.
Pistorius's lawyer Kenny Oldwage said on Thursday the athlete would apply for bail. Pistorius spent Thursday night in a holding cell at the Boschkop police station.
Police said Pistorius's application for bail would be opposed.
Initial reports about the shooting suggested it was a case of mistaken identity, and that the gunman had thought Steenkamp was a burglar.
However, the police said this information had not come from them.
On Thursday morning police escorted Pistorius from his home to the Boschkop police station. He was then taken to the Mamelodi Day Clinic for blood and other tests, which police said were routine in such cases.
He was taken back to the police station, where he was escorted to a holding cell.
