Cape Town - The board of Media24 on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Professor Rachel Jafta as its new chairperson.

She will succeed Professor Jakes Gerwel, who died in November last year.

Jaftha, a professor of economics at Stellenbosch University, has been a director at Media24 since 2007.

Naspers chairperson Ton Vosloo hailed the appointment as a proud moment in the history of the group.

"Rachel is the first woman, and the first black woman, to chair Media24 - a wonderful milestone. We hold her in high regard and believe she is the right person for the position.

"I wish her the very best with the challenges of this new role," he said in a statement.

Jafta said that she was honoured to follow in the footsteps of Professor Gerwel.
