Media24, ex-editor fined for Jurie story

2011-12-08 09:35

Cape Town - Media24 and former Huisgenoot editor Esmare Weideman have to pay R75 000 in fines for publishing an article alleging sexual abuse by Afrikaans singer Jurie Els, according to a report in Beeld on Thursday.

The Western Cape High Court made the ruling on Wednesday, after Weideman and Media24 were found guilty of contempt of court in the Supreme Court of Appeal last year.

In February 2008 Huisgenoot published an article about Els, in which the singer Robbie Klay claimed he was molested by him. Els's name was not mentioned in the article, but he was named in the magazine's editorial.

Weideman has to pay a fine of R15 000 and Media24 R60 000, the high court ruled.

Judge Daniel Dlodlo said in his ruling that the independence of the media was a cornerstone of democracy, and that the courts would always protect and support media freedom.

Els has been acquitted on charges of molesting Klay.

I agree. No matter how many lives are destoyed - as long as they get their sales.

Pay the fine as it still does not alter the truth which are so obvious. And Jurie will have his pay back day still also.

Good lord, much like the ongoing Steve Hofmeyer soap opera, these people all run to the you magazine when they need to announce their latest episode. Not just the magazine is to blame, our local fame sluts are all guilty of trying to get every moment of their sad little lives published, in order to extend their 15 minutes of fame.

      clivecorbz - 2011-12-08 10:29

      I blame the readers.

      MissGremlinSays - 2011-12-08 10:52

@ Clive, yep, merit in that argument too.

  • Philip - 2011-12-08 10:24

Let Steve pay it, I think he still owes her a couple of rand for the tea party that went wrong.

  • ludlowdj - 2011-12-08 11:01

Els being acquitted, as we all know does not mean he is innocent just that there is not enough proof to convict him. Even though this is an expensive lesson, if the exposure protects even one future alleged victim then it is money well spent.

    :)

  • Deeteem - 2011-12-08 11:05

I still think Jurie is soooooooo suspect !!!

  • Phumezo - 2011-12-08 11:07

I am sure Jurie Else would be on our side when we are calling for the MAT to be fasttracked! R 75 000 nothing or a joke compared to the damaged done! Again there is no recourse for the victim! What we need to see is the nailing and jailing of those who are involved in information peddling and telling the public lies. Because these types of things to break up families and peoples reputations are permanently damaged!

  • paulmandlankosi - 2011-12-08 11:14

Just pay Media 24 and not the last

  • Charmaine - 2011-12-08 11:25

Good, they always publish Gossip with out getting the facts. Their fines should have been higher, so that in future other Editors will take heed.

  • Louw - 2011-12-08 12:54

Laat dit 'n les wees vir haar.

  • Never-apologize - 2011-12-08 14:05

Had we had the MAT, Jurie would be receiving even more as well as an Apology in the first page of the same Magazine and probably the medium we are using now, what is R75 000 from all the sales they made with that publication?
