Johannesburg – The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) will hold a memorial service for its former general secretary !Khoisan X, previously known as Benny Alexander, in Johannesburg on Wednesday, the party said.

The memorial will be held at the Johannesburg City hall at noon, and the funeral will be in Kimberley on Saturday, October 23.

"The PAC of Azania is deeply saddened by the passing away of our former general secretary !Khoisan X. We hereby send our condolences to the family," the party said on Tuesday.

It said he played a critical role in awakening the consciousness of people around their heritage, and the ownership of land.

"When it was time to change the name of one of the provinces of our country he changed his own name, thus engaging in what writer Ngugi wa Thiongo terms 'the decolonisation of the mind'."

X died of a stroke last Wednesday at the age of 55.
