Mbombela - Three men accused of assaulting an elderly woman with sjamboks and burning her skin with a hot clothing iron have been remanded in custody.

The suspects, Thulani Nonyana, 38, Senzo Maseko, 27, and Lucky Msibi, 44, briefly appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Friday.

They are accused of attacking Christine Otto, 75, who lives on a farm in Burnside near Mbombela on 20 March.

They were not asked to plead on charges of house robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and possession of suspected stolen property.

They were arrested last Tuesday in different townships including Dwaleni, Pienaar and Gutshwa outside White River and Mbombela.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala told African Eye News Service that during the robbery the attackers took an undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones and used Otto's car as a getaway.

"The attackers used sjamboks to assault the victim and also used an electric iron to torture her to surrender the keys to her safe. They took four firearms from the safe, a DVD player, an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene in her blue Kia Picanto which was found abandoned in Kabokweni near White River two weeks after the incident," he said.

He said a shotgun, pistol, a pair of binoculars and a cellphone were recovered during the arrest and four more cellphones were also confiscated.

He added that all the firearms that were seized during the operation would be sent to forensics to determine if they were linked to other serious crimes in the Mbombela area.
