Men found with bloody rhino horn

2012-03-01 13:11

Johannesburg - Four people were arrested in Bedfordview on Thursday when they were found in possession of a rhino horn after a car crash, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said their vehicle car crashed into another car on the N3.

Afterwards, the driver of the other car saw them hiding a cooler bag under a nearby tree.

"Police responded to the scene and during the investigation they discovered the rhino horn in the cooler bag and it was still bleeding.

"Members of the Hawks were called to the scene and arrested the four people," said Ndou.

He said the four, aged between 19 and 33, would appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Monday for illegal possession of a rhino horn.

CUT THEIR HORNS OFF THEN LET THEM ALSO BLEED OUT

      Gina - 2012-03-01 13:19

These reporters really need to do their research!! The horn was a fake and made of wood Full Story ---> http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/bedfordview-edenvale/bedfordview-edenvale-news-crime?oid=5064421&sn=Detail&pid=217413&Rhino-horn-is-a-fake---Hawks

      David - 2012-03-01 13:46

A fake horn hidden in a cooler bag????

      Nicholas - 2012-03-01 14:02

Even if it was fake, they are still crooks as no doubt they were going to to try and pass it off as the real thing.

      Marion - 2012-03-01 14:08

@Nicholas - you're quite correct. A program on rhino poaching showed how a guy was making false rhino horns and that they were managing to sell them without the buyers realizing they weren't real.

      ivan.coetzee2 - 2012-03-01 14:12

Why would a fake, wooden rhino horn bleed and why keep it in a cooler bag??

      Naseema - 2012-03-01 14:15

      Fake horns don't bleed Gina..

      David - 2012-03-01 14:42

I've decided to get into the rhino horn trade. I'll be making fakes from horsehair, glue and cyanide.

      Gina - 2012-03-01 14:49

Read the article on the link I posted!! The blood is fake as well... @Nicholas, I definitely agree, these guys are crooking the crooks!

      Michelle - 2012-03-01 14:56

someone got paid big bucks to hide the real horn

      Rudie - 2012-03-02 11:51

ha me ? me so horny.

  • Alan - 2012-03-01 13:17

No bail for the baas teds!

  • Marion - 2012-03-01 13:18

This really turned my stomach. B@st@rds.

  • BuzzM - 2012-03-01 13:18

    Nail them to the wall!!!

  • Jan - 2012-03-01 13:21

Apparently the horn was a fake. How could it be bleeding?

      Mvikeli - 2012-03-01 13:43

poor reporting, it was not bleeding

  • Shirley - 2012-03-01 13:23

Lets see the sentence...it will be laughable. Should be bound and tortured!

  • Snoopy.zn - 2012-03-01 13:26

What about the pain that animal goes through.. How can people do this! Dont they feel guilty for torturing an animal, dont they feel guilty for killing an animal. OMW, cold heartless F@ck Ups!

  • Richard - 2012-03-01 13:31

So its a wooden horn.....OR....somebody realised what had fallen into their lap and made a quick swop and story, and now the real horn is being offered for sale quietly!! Why hide a fake wooden horn under a tree.

      Bronwyn - 2012-03-01 13:37

Have to admit that crossed my mind as well

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-03-01 13:42

sadly it also came to my mind...

      Stormkaap - 2012-03-01 13:59

And why in a cooler bag..

      Craig - 2012-03-01 14:09

Hmmm... wooden horn in a cooler bag. Sounds like they using the same Spin Doctor that says there is no corruption in SA.

      Marion - 2012-03-01 14:09

      Sharp Richard.

  • denise.wilshire - 2012-03-01 13:35

While I do not condone it, I understand mob justice! I would not be surprised if there are some unwelcome visitors around the Bedfordview Police station. It might also be good to have a camera in that courtroom. C'mon Green Scorpions do some work for a change.

  • Bronwyn - 2012-03-01 13:36

Regardless of the horn being a fake, they should be arrested (or hanged in my opinion) regardless as they are still involved with he illegal trade which encourages the slaughter of these innocent animals!!

  • Gavin - 2012-03-01 13:41

there isn't a punishment that can be applied to a crime like this.

  • janinebotha - 2012-03-01 13:50

I'm sorry but why hide it behind a bush if it was fake. I believe if they can sell fake horns, they have sold real horns before many times. @Tshililo DOES IT REALLY MATTER what color the perpetrators are? Still a poacher doesn't matter what color/Race!!!!!

  • Su - 2012-03-01 13:51

Kill them, kill them, kill them.

  • Peter Grunow - 2012-03-01 13:51

Truely shocking. These people need to be made into an example. Chuck them in C-Max and throw away the key. I don't mind being taxed for their suffering

  • Amanda - 2012-03-01 14:00

WOW the desperation, a wooden horn with blood! If they could have gotten hold of a real RHINO they would have killed it, would be poachers should be treated exactly the same as the real ones. Unfortunately at the moment no serious action seem to be taken against poachers, no deterrent to stop killings!

  • Nigel - 2012-03-01 14:02

name them, lets see their pictures

  • Craig - 2012-03-01 14:05

Where's that book. I wanna throw it at them....

  • Linda - 2012-03-01 14:12

    Sounds like a booming business!

  • Gcwabe-KaMavovo - 2012-03-01 14:27

A horn doesn't bleed. News24 is really going down the pits.

      janinebotha - 2012-03-01 14:35

In actual fact they hack half of the poor Rhino's face off. So YES it does bleed if you count the flesh still attached to it.

      Bongs Kheswa - 2012-03-01 14:49

Gcwabe let me correct u da horn does bleed im also wrkng wit animals nd i've been lng in da game.

      Christopher Rudolph Lourens - 2012-03-01 14:53

A horn will have flesh attached to it from being cut from a rhino which bleeds...

      Cuan Michael Jeftha - 2012-03-01 17:25

      Get your facts straight dude...

      Gcwabe-KaMavovo - 2012-03-02 12:16

No, what bleeds is the surrounding tissue. Just like when you overcut a fingernail and bleed. Keratin cannot bleed. My point was that News24 should have said "a bloody horn", or "a horn covered with blood". "Bleeding" infers that there's living tissue inside the horn which is able to bleed. This is false.

  • renejupp - 2012-03-01 14:39

    Horn for a horn!

  • Andrew - 2012-03-01 14:51

Cut off their arms and legs without an anaesthetic. Barbaric pigs!!

  • Michelle - 2012-03-01 14:53

Someone got paid BIG BUCKS to make the real rhino horn dissapear

Fake or not..... it still shows there are buyers out there.

  • kotze.ansie - 2012-03-02 11:07

They must torture them very bad, they must scream and cry for help. Get it on video and spread it all over for every one to see. Put it on youtube, TV, so that the poachers can see what happens when you kill our Rhino's.

  • kswanepoel - 2012-03-02 11:43

These people should be tortured for days on end and every toe and fingernail pulled out with pliers and they should be left to die a very slow death on a hill near the Cape Vultures!

  • hadedah - 2012-03-03 15:42

absolutely NO bail for them, straight to jail and loose the keys. Let them rot.Like many baby rhino have rotted after their mothers were shot just for the Horn.

  • Sandy - 2012-03-03 15:47

    The bloody savages,

  • Hilda - 2012-03-05 18:07
