Ramsgate - Two men charged with the murder of an ANC councillor appeared briefly in the Ramsgate District Court on Wednesday.

Dumisane Sikhakhane, 35, and Kwanele Hlongwane, 40, both face two counts of murder. Hlongwane is also charged with illegal possession of ammunition and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Wandile Mkhize was shot dead in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate, on July 30.

Nhlakanipho Shabane, who was with him at the time, spent three weeks in a coma before dying in hospital.

Police previously said Sikhakhane faced a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

There was a strong security presence outside the court, where some ANC supporters gathered.

The case was postponed to October 11 to allow Hlongwane to obtain legal representation.
