Men rob supermarket in Dutywa

Johannesburg - A gang of men robbed a supermarket in Dutywa of a large amount of cash, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

"About eight armed men entered this shop while the shop was already closed but not locked. They pointed firearms at the security as well as the owners," said Captain Lingsile Magama.

The men hit one of the owners on the head with a firearm and demanded the keys to the safe. They made off with a "significant" amount of cash and two cellphones.

Magama said that the business was owned by two Chinese nationals who were locked in a storage room.

The robbery happened at about 18:45 on Friday.

In a separate incident, a man was robbed in Simunye squatter camp in Butterworth.

The man was walking on the street at 14:00 on Friday, when a man he knew drew a firearm and demanded cash. He then put his hand into the man's pocket and took R750 from him. The alleged robber then fled. He said the man was known in the community and police expect to arrest him soon.
