Metro cop asks for bribe at road block

2011-12-30 20:04

Johannesburg - A metro police officer was arrested after he allegedly solicited a bribe from a minibus taxi driver in Ophirton on Friday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 35-year-old officer was working at a road block when he found a taxi with a faulty handbrake.

He asked the driver for R300, but the man only had R120.

The driver reported the matter to the metro police's internal affairs and returned to the road block to identify the officer.

He was arrested and expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

    Lekker!!!

      Squeegee - 2011-12-30 21:13

So Mr Policeman, if you let him go and he killed a few of his passangers and a few other road users, you would have let it all happen for R300. Throw the key away.

Come on guys! He did not ask for a bribe! He asked for his Xmas bonus!

      Sharkshoot - 2011-12-31 14:46

Well done to the taxi driver! If we all did this.....

      kgomotso.radise - 2011-12-31 00:11

I wish all taxi drivers/motorists have the same attitude

      chris.faurie - 2011-12-31 11:37

He required his R120 back, therefore there was action. Good!!!

  • moby.quest - 2011-12-30 20:32

I hope he gets a hefty fine and kicked off the police force. Props to the taxi driver for reporting this guy! We need more people like these who have the b@lls to report illegal activity. (Dude, just go fix your handbrake now please!!)

  • ArchAngel - 2011-12-30 21:17

Hopefully all these corrupt cops get FIRED as well, with loss of all pension benefits. What I have heard is that they still in the police even after being found guilty at their internal disciplinary hearings and court cases.

  • Siso - 2011-12-30 21:58

Well done to the taxi driver, but am sure he did it because he had only R120. Had it been the cop asked for something lesser than what the taxi driver had he wouldnt have exposed the traffic police, and the traffic officers do this all the time so this he met his match.

      chris.faurie - 2011-12-31 11:38

I agree, the price was to high!

  • braamc - 2011-12-30 22:12

There is a surprise. A corrupt Metro Cop, have you ever

  • Calvin - 2011-12-30 22:56

Yes bribing is wrong. But there is more to this than just merely bribe. Some motorist can be upset when given a fine. They will in turn clain that the officer took a bribe. All the Metropolitan departments should be sur before taking any further steps. If it was me who was unlawfully arrested I would sue the council for defamation of character. All the motorists should be obedient and face the music or else hell will brake loose.

      John - 2011-12-31 04:03

Calvin, isn't it a bit early to be smoking something or are you still at it from last night.

    Well done Taxi driver....

  • Lephutsi - 2011-12-31 09:14

It seems the metro police is corrupt to the core. The solution is to disband the force and recruit new members.

      chris.faurie - 2011-12-31 11:42

With all due respect, the Metro does not work. They are a modified police force and does not operate as Traffic Police. Please bring back the old Traffic Police or as we so fondly referred to them "Speed Cops".

A taxi driver has done something right....my irony meter just exploded.

  • Gail - 2011-12-31 12:13

Wayne Minnaar - wake up. This happens all day ever day. Especially when you put up a road block over a long week-end. Can you see the likes of a wealthy man or government official spending a week-end in jail. Not a chance. They pay a 'spot fine' and go.

  • Bob - 2011-12-31 14:08

Well done to the taxi driver. We all need to remember that you cant have corrupt police and traffic officers without a corrupt society!

  • Roslyn - 2011-12-31 16:03

Was this police officer trained at Douglasdale Police StATION

  • Ryan - 2012-01-18 17:08

Now if we could have the comrades in Govt arrested this effectively for tender rigging, fraud and looting, we'd be on the road to a sustainable future.
