Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer died in hospital after a shoot-out with a robber in Roodepoort on Wednesday, metro police said.
"The officer died in the hospital after being admitted in a critical condition," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.
"That is all we can say at this point."
The robber bumped into the officer's motorcycle as he tried to get away in a bakkie from the robbery scene at the Flora shopping centre.
A shoot-out ensued between the two and both suffered gunshot wounds.
The suspected robber was still in hospital and would face a charge of attempted murder as soon as he recovered, Minnaar said.
Police were investigating.
