Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was wounded in a shoot-out near the Marlboro Gautrain station on Wednesday, said the metro police.

Shots were fired when the metro policeman and a colleague were attacked by robbers at Pan Africa, in Alexandra, at 10:50, said spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

The robbers had pulled up next to the metro police in a car and ordered them to give them their service firearms.

The robbers fled after wounding one of the metro police officials in the arm and waist.

He was taken to Sunninghill Hospital, where he was in a stable condition, Mamonyane said.

"The perpetrators got away, but the car was recovered with a gun inside in Alex," she said.

Police were following a lead and an arrest was "highly possible" soon.
