Johannesburg - Three Metrorail employees were treated for shock and smoke inhalation after three coaches of a stationary Metrorail train caught fire at the company's Braamfontein yard, said Nana Radebe, a spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Management Services.

Radebe told News24 that they had received a call just after midday and upon arrival, emergency workers found the coaches on fire.

"At the moment they are fully extinguished," she said from the servicing and testing yard.

According to Metrorail, the damage to the coaches is estimated at R11.5m.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
