Meyerton crash: 'Driver lost control'

2012-06-25 14:37

Pretoria - All the injured from the Meyerton bus crash have been taken to various hospitals after their bus hit the rails of a bridge and plummeted 10m to the ground.

At least 19 people were killed on Monday morning when the Putco bus plummeted off a bridge after the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the bus was carrying about 70 people of "working age".

After more than five hours working on the scene to free people from the wreckage, rescue personnel eventually lifted the bus from the scene.

Jackson said the injured were rushed to different hospitals in the greater Vaal region, while the critically injured were airlifted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Condolences to the deceased's families. Was the driver competent? What about experience? Did he have a genuine drivers license?

  • zuko.yena - 2012-06-25 14:50

I am sorry but these Putco bus driver have become increasingly reckless on the roads! On the daily i witness these bus drivers breaking the speed limit, recklessly overtaking and out right behaving quite like the disgusting taxis in this country!! #Sick

I cannot but agree with you whenI see these Putco drivers not stopping at stop streets in the Vaal Triangle, exceeding the 60km/h speed limits and other driving infractions. I have reported these to their supervisors and still see the same drivers continuing to drive recklessly.

      Moi - 2012-06-25 15:12

Must agree with you Steve. I'm also in the Vaal and they're an absolute nuisance and hazard. Don't indicate, break lights don't work etc... It's scary. Unfortunately, the poor people that have to get on those buses every day don't have a choice. It's that or taxis....not much of a choice really.

      Kala - 2012-06-25 15:24

The busses in Durban are just as bad. Here they drive on the verges if there is a traffic jam. I sit and watch them driving past my office window.

      tgif.wtfaw - 2012-06-25 18:10

Sorry Zuko these pesky laws of Physics and Gravity itself only applies to white people. This country is run by Black people and they do not have to adhere to these pesky white mans rules, Sorry !!!

      zuko.yena - 2012-06-26 12:57

....and once again race becomes part of the problem! tgif.wtfaw Sorry but you just exposed your own naivety with a comment like that! Instead of showing or sharing some sort of intellectual opinion or fact about this very serious problem we have in the country, you chose to expose yourself as one of the actual problems this country has!

  • gary.wilby.18 - 2012-06-25 14:57

    Was the vehicle roadworthy??????

      procold2 - 2012-06-25 15:01

doubt it gary, puco will cover it up though.

  • jabulile.mahlangu.7 - 2012-06-25 15:14

Is realy pain full I feel sorry for the family lost May God help them and thoes who still alive in Hospital. I feel sorry for driver also it was not his tension is accident.

      zuko.yena - 2012-06-25 15:28

Sorry Jabulile but as discussed in my earlier post these drivers really are not displaying a character of caring for their passengers safety as well as the users on the roads either!! To loose control of a bus i can only imagine it to have been travelling pretty fast... fast enough for even the, we assume "Experienced" driver to not be able to handle! #NoExcuse!!!!

  • sarelvdwalt - 2012-06-25 15:16

If you look at how the Putco busses drive on the N1 when I go home in the afternoons, not indicating, racing off toward the car in front of them, just changing lanes with no regard for the cars that's occupying it at the time - it's no wonder the "driver lost control" ... heck, I perhaps never was in control to begin with.

      inociathilivhali - 2012-06-26 11:30

i think now is the time for those who still driving the way, they wait at the road they have to change.

      So?

      somikazi.pita - 2012-06-26 13:18

Which race do you prefer? And how is that relevant in this tragedy?

"driver lost control"----possible causes are Drunk, sleepy, speed, bus not roadworthy or driver was simply reckless. Unfortunately we have seen too many of these recently.....but NO ACTION. drivers acquire licences too easily wityhout any form of education. A private road safety initiative called FATAL MOVES aims at equipping drivers to be more safe. Take a look at pics and vids and driver edcucation materila on the website wwwfatalmovesdotcom

  • celia.vanniekerkswanepoel - 2012-06-25 15:57

It is a miracle there are not more incidents like these - most of the drivers I see on the road every day are quite reckless

  • hannes.vanwyk.9 - 2012-06-25 16:07

Is the bus allowed to take 70 passengers? Don't they just take 65? Do yourself a favor and just see how many buses travel at speeds greater than 100 and then we are surprised that the driver loses control. All buses should have a black box, downloaded after each shift to help prevent speeding. My condolences to the families.

  • dhavandran.palavar - 2012-06-25 16:13

Public Utility Termination Company. no regard for human lives. they skim on maintenance and repairs with the full knowledge that they are safe because gordhan and his cANCer thugs own these utilities. bastards! my sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.

  • maseo.moses.3 - 2012-06-25 16:21

Those transports is the one who they makes an increasing of death rate in south africa these makes our country to be unemployment country but the killer of our employed people is those transport they alway in a speed i just wana say to the affecting god bless and show them that he is there with them in every situation and i want to say to the transportation company do not let us angry because of these again

  • noyi.thembeka - 2012-06-25 16:28

saying it from someone who uses these taxis and bus every day, its much the owners fault for not servicing their cars or buses as it is the drivers, who cant properly drive and has no clue what to do when they get it in a tight situation, as much ppl ask themselves why we get into them knowing that we are putting our lives at risk, there is nothing we can do cause we can’t afford cars as yet, and we need to get to work you just get into a taxi or a bus and say a little prayer and if it happens you are in one of those taxis that gets in an accidents, then it’s your day there is nothing you can do,

  • robin.stobbs.9 - 2012-06-25 16:54

Far too many driver claim they 'lost control'! Can anyone here explain how one can lose control over their vehicle if they are driving according to the law. I have driven in umpteen countries on three Continents, over all kinds of road surfaces (and that includes some rally driving) and in all those 62 years have never 'lost control' over my vehicle. It says something for the quality of today's drivers and their reckless contempt of the law doesn't it?

  • ian.d.samson - 2012-06-25 17:16

Yeah right, imprison that driver (if he survived). We do not need irresponsible bus drivers on our roads. Even the Sacramento Bee has reported this, that's how fast bad news travels these days!
