SA's top detectives handling Meyiwa case

The country's top regional and national detectives have been appointed to investigate the fatal shooting of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa. Watch. WATCH

Johannesburg - Senzo Meyiwa’s last minutes were marked by agony and terror, says a neighbour who had run to Kelly Khumalo’s home, after he heard gunshots.

According to Mbuyiselwa Kula, who lives next door to Khumalo, a singer and Meyiwa’s girlfriend, the soccer star was found lying on her dining room floor with a gunshot wound.

Kula told the Times that Meyiwa looked frightened and tried to say something but those trying to help him had to remain calm.

Another neighbour says Meyiwa’s body was already limp when they carried him to his car outside Khumalo’s Vosloorus, East Rand, home to rush him to hospital.

It is hoped that forensic experts will be able to recover DNA from a beanie and glove taken from one of the attackers.

Gauteng police say rumours suggesting the murder was a hit are untrue.

"We do not have evidence which suggests that this was a contract killing or a hit on Mr Meyiwa," Sapa reports Major General Norman Taioe as telling reporters in Johannesburg on Monday.

"There was no gun aimed specifically at him."
However, Gauteng head of detectives Major-General Tebello Mosikili told The Star that police were taking every possible lead and motive seriously.

Mosikili confirmed to the newspaper that IT experts were looking at an Instagram post claiming that Khumalo’s sister had been fighting with her boyfriend when Meyiwa tried to intervene and the boyfriend allegedly shot him.

The Star says the Crimestop line had also received a call from someone alleging that Meyiwa did not die during a robbery.
