Midrand hijacker shot dead

2012-05-09 16:02

Johannesburg - A man has been shot dead and another arrested after a hijacking in Midrand, Johannesburg metro police said on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said patrolling officers noticed a black Fiat on Tuesday at about 19:00, which had been reported hijacked earlier in Rabie Ridge.

"The driver of the car refused to stop and a police chase ensued on Republic Road."

As soon as the Fiat came to a stop, the men inside shot at the police, who returned fire.

"One man was shot dead, another arrested, and two others managed to flee the scene on foot."

Police were still searching for the two men who fled.

The hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed handgun were recovered. The arrested man was expected to appear in court soon.

great news exellent work SAP, now catch the other two and maybe they will also resist then you can shoot them too.

      Thato - 2012-05-09 16:30

Lol!! I'l drink to that one too Pro** hahaha!!

      Buzz - 2012-05-09 16:33

Interesting point to ponder - We have heard about the poor shooting and firearm skills of the SAPS yet they always manage to shoot the criminals who shoot at them. Does this mean the SAPS shooting isn't that bad or that most crimnals' shooting are absolutely abysmal?

      Bryan - 2012-05-09 16:42

Another one bites the dust.... I reckon the cop who shot this bloke should get a performance bonus:-)

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-09 16:54

Well done cops!! I must add though (with it being in almost every news story that 1 or 2 always escape), with regards to your bullet proof vests being 'not user friendly', its obvious that you don't run after the crooks that escape, otherwise that issue wouldn't be an issue. that can be your food for thought (a nice light meal of words and not KFC)

      rbphiri - 2012-05-09 18:14

Great news, less scum on the streets. Pity that the bullets didn't reach the other two. If found, shoot them and ask questions later.

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-05-09 18:34

      jolly good show SAPS

      Jaco - 2012-05-09 20:47

i think the one thumb down on your comment might be one of the highjackers that got away....hahaha

      Syd - 2012-05-09 21:28

The report mentions Wayne Minnaar so that tells me it was not SAP who got the scumbags but Joburg Metro Police!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 10:01

@Peter-Peter, never been a cop have you? Coming across criminals, armed to the teeth, at night and finding yourself in a gun fight....There is a huge difference between training for the eventuality and finding yourself in that eventuality. Training not only shows you how to handle the situation but to walk out of it alive, if the situation warrants caution and as a result you survive then they played it out exactly as they were trained to do. rather track down a criminal then try be a hero and lie dead on the road..

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-10 10:53

Agreed PointBlank, that is the wise thing to do. Wouldn't that be an area for the police to target and work on preventing though? Surely they can adopt procedures from cops in other countries? A fundamental rule of police, is only stop the chase IF the public is in direct danger. I find it hard to believe that in almost every single 'spotting of a suspect vehicle' scenario, that the police are unable to give chase. I get the impression that a vast majority of the police force panic when in a dangerous situation, and that is what the training should prevent. Here is an idea, don't go in with guns blazing! Wait for backup after spotting a suspect car, BEFORE they approach the suspects. I understand that I wasn't there and don't know what sort of circumstances these guys are in, but with crime being so rampant, that should be a bit of motivation for the cops to stop at nothing to bring these guys to book...surely?

Good ridance to bad rubbish, my tax money won't be feeding one of the scambags

      rbphiri - 2012-05-09 18:15

      Maggots will feed on him.

  • Gregory - 2012-05-09 16:15

Idiots, no self respecting hijacker would steal a fiat. Not surprising they got caught.

      Bryan - 2012-05-09 16:43

Bwahaha... thats funny bro..Agreed, at least steal something decent!!

      Sheik - 2012-05-09 17:18

      Start Small.

      rbphiri - 2012-05-09 18:19

Hahaha maybe because they heard that it's very economical, especially in this period of taxation. Chances are that the group are ameatures that's why they went for a fiat. That's like opting for a donkey instead of a horse.

  • Keith - 2012-05-09 16:16

  • Vandross - 2012-05-09 16:24

Yeeeaaaahhh! We are hearing good news these days. The same kind of efforts should be done towards corruption amongst the government officials. Another thumbs up to the SAP

  • rithin.sewsunker - 2012-05-09 16:25

So was the hijacker from Midrand? The article mentions Republic Road and Rabie Ridge. Both are in Randburg. Forgive me if I missed something.

  • Nigel - 2012-05-09 17:17

Show no mercy - good one SAPS. These swine have by their own choice rejected our society and the civilised world, and would kill in an instant for a cell phone. No mercy.

  • sylvester - 2012-05-09 17:18

At least there are some Police Officers who passed their gun handling in training! Just a pity they are such poor shots!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 10:03

Ok smart arse, let's see how well you do while under gun fire at night...

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-09 17:21

I have a question: had the hijacker been injured, where would he have gone? To the garden city clinic? I can't afford to go there. I landed up at the Helen Joseph without sheets and blankets with a suspected heart attack - I pay taxes and am not a thief - who says crime doesn't pay?

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 10:08

He would be taken to the nearest government hospital and not a private clinic. depending on the severity of his wounds he may be stabilised at a clinic but will be transferred to a hospital thereafter..

  • Bra Tebzaah Sibilanga - 2012-05-09 17:21

You work very hard, and when you reap the rewards, out of nowhere some lazy bastard decides to come and forcefully take what's rightfully yours. He then abandons it in squatter camps, takes only the radio and go on a drinking binge.Stupid ne!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 10:08

      Stupid? More like retarded.

  • rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-05-09 17:27

Now thats what i call swift justice! Find the others and make them pay too! Well done to the dedicated law enforcers! Who said we dont have death as a penalty in SA?

  • Gee - 2012-05-09 17:32

Cost of one police bullet: R2.95 extermination of scum: absolutely PRICELESS

  • merushan - 2012-05-09 18:06

    Die you bastards :D

  • Sonja - 2012-05-09 18:13

Bummer..... if only this headline read "100 Hijackers shot dead" !!

  • Dooie - 2012-05-09 19:40

    Justice served.

  • Maximus Odinidus - 2012-05-09 20:51

With regards to being poor shots, i think what we all forget and some don't know is that as soon as a cop kills a suspect, he is automatically investigated. Their accuracy is recorded in training exercises and used as evidence so if the cop has 100% accuracy he can be tried for murder if je kills the suspect. Much like you and I, "but you have 100% accuracy officer blah, why not just shoot him in the leg?"

  • Maximus Odinidus - 2012-05-09 20:55

Also with regards to bullet proof vests. The vest covers most of the upper torso however our bullet proof vests aren't like you see on tv. The actual protective part is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-10 10:06

Correct... not only that, when under fire you take cover behind your vehicle and you body is not exposed but your head is... People who have never been in that situation think they have all the answers, I bet they would be lying in a foetal position bawling like babies if they landed up in that situaiton...

  • mninela1 - 2012-05-09 21:03

dissapointing updates about my surroundings, even scary I once went to this place at night and it did look unsafe.

  • Ambrose - 2012-05-10 01:28

      Rhouda - 2012-05-10 10:51

  • Craig - 2012-05-10 07:37

Shoot every damned one of them dead.

  • gailcarolynhayes - 2012-05-10 09:02

Great News again - well done SAPS. Let's hope you can get the other two and that they two resist and get removed from society in the same way. Less overcrowding in jails and less need for Zuma to release criminals already sitting in jail for valid reasons.

  • letho.mkhabela - 2012-06-05 18:24

i am glad to hear that in south africa we still have 1 if not 2 police men who are able to use their guns to protect the citizens beside shooting their partners.
