Johannesburg - A Westonaria mineworker was arrested on suspicion of being involved in ATM bombings, Gauteng police said on Monday.
The police's Crime Intelligence Covert Collection Directorate arrested the Kloof gold mine worker on Sunday, allegedly in possession of five gel sticks used as an industrial explosive, said spokesperson Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding.
The man is expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Golding commented that in most ATM bombings, the thieves failed to extract money from the machines, although this type of crime was proving costly for banks and mines, and traumatising communities. She asked people to phone or SMS tip offs to Crime Stop 08600-10111 or 32211.
